Divisão de Bioinformática e Bioestatística da USF Centro de Epidemiologia Pediátrica: Melhorando a saúde infantil por meio da pesquisa
A USF Health é uma parceria única entre a Faculdade de Medicina, a Faculdade de Enfermagem e a Faculdade de Saúde Pública da Universidade do Sul da Flórida. Esta parceria é dedicada a melhorar a saúde em todos os aspectos - desde fatores ambientais até a saúde individual. Um aspecto importante dessa missão é a pesquisa, onde entra o Centro de Epidemiologia Pediátrica da Divisão de Bioinformática e Bioestatística da USF.
A Divisão de Bioinformática e Bioestatística do Centro de Epidemiologia Pediátrica (PEc) da USF foi criada em 2005 com foco na melhoria da saúde infantil por meio de pesquisas. A missão do centro é conduzir pesquisas epidemiológicas de alta qualidade que levarão a melhores estratégias de prevenção, tratamentos e resultados para crianças.
O PEc conta com uma equipe de pesquisadores experientes e especialistas em suas respectivas áreas. Eles trabalham em colaboração em vários projetos relacionados à epidemiologia pediátrica, bioestatística, bioinformática, genética/genômica, metodologia/gerenciamento/análise/relatório de ensaios clínicos, bem como gerenciamento/análise/relatório de dados.
Uma área em que o PEc fez contribuições significativas é a pesquisa do transtorno do espectro do autismo (ASD). O centro esteve envolvido em vários estudos de larga escala com o objetivo de identificar fatores de risco para TEA e desenvolver intervenções eficazes para crianças afetadas. Por exemplo, um estudo conduzido pelo PEc descobriu que a exposição materna à poluição do ar durante a gravidez pode aumentar o risco de TEA na prole.
Outra área em que o PEc fez contribuições significativas é a pesquisa sobre obesidade infantil. O centro esteve envolvido em vários estudos destinados a identificar fatores de risco para obesidade infantil e desenvolver intervenções eficazes para crianças afetadas. Por exemplo, um estudo conduzido pela PEc descobriu que a exposição precoce a antibióticos pode aumentar o risco de obesidade infantil.
Além de conduzir seus próprios projetos de pesquisa, o PEc também colabora com outras instituições em vários projetos de epidemiologia pediátrica, como ensaios clínicos multicêntricos ou estudos observacionais financiados por doações do NIH ou do CDC.
O PEc também oferece oportunidades de treinamento para estudantes interessados em seguir carreiras relacionadas à epidemiologia pediátrica ou bioestatística/bioinformática por meio de estágios ou programas de bolsas oferecidos pelas faculdades de saúde da USF ou fontes externas de financiamento, como bolsas de treinamento NIH T32.
No geral, o Centro de Epidemiologia Pediátrica da Divisão de Bioinformática e Bioestatística da USF desempenha um papel importante não apenas dentro da USF Health, mas também nacional/internacionalmente no que diz respeito ao avanço do conhecimento sobre questões de saúde infantil por meio de investigação científica rigorosa usando métodos/ferramentas/abordagens de ponta enquanto fornecendo oportunidades de treinamento para os cientistas das gerações futuras que continuarão este trabalho crítico para entender melhor como podemos melhorar os resultados da saúde infantil globalmente, reduzindo as disparidades entre diferentes populações/grupos com base em raça/etnia/gênero/status socioeconômico/etc.
