Dois anos atrás, no meu caminho para substituir a catarata, fui diagnosticado com Distrofia Corneana de Fuchs grave em ambos os olhos. Se não for tratada, isso acabará por levar à cegueira total. As alternativas cirúrgicas típicas envolvem a substituição da córnea ou, mais recentemente, a inserção de uma camada de tecido epitelial.
Felizmente, fui encaminhado a um cirurgião de córnea incrivelmente talentoso, Dr. Robert Weisenthal, em Dewitt, NY. Após um exame minucioso, ele me ofereceu um procedimento cirúrgico novo e recentemente disponível, denominado Descemet Stripping Only (DSO para abreviar). Este DSO seria feito imediatamente antes de remover a catarata e inserir a nova lente. Todo o processo levaria apenas 30 minutos, mas a recuperação da visão total provavelmente seria um processo lento, levando de 2 a 3 meses.
Dr. Weisenthal disse que a melhor visão que eu poderia alcançar com o DSO pode ser apenas 20/45. No entanto, a alternativa clássica me deixaria precisando de colírios esteróides para o resto da minha vida e correria o risco de o transplante ser rejeitado. Portanto, foi uma decisão muito fácil escolher este novo procedimento DSO.
Fiz meu olho esquerdo em setembro de 2019 e, em seguida, meu olho direito em julho de 2020. Fiz uma verificação de rotina de progresso em 29 de setembro de 2020 e fiquei muito satisfeito ao saber que meu olho esquerdo está agora em 20/25 e meu o olho direito é 20/30.
