Processo de Liquefação de Gás Natural
Existem dois tipos de terminais de GNL, que são terminais que convertem gás natural em GNL e um terminal de GNL que o converte novamente em gás natural. Cada um deles é denominado terminal de desembolso e terminal de regaseificação. O terminal de desembolso está no lado da transação de exportação e o terminal de regaseificação está no lado da transação de importação.
O terminal de liquefação geralmente recebe gás natural por meio de dutos do campo. Antes disso, o gás liquefeito deve ser limpo de água, dióxido de carbono, sulfeto de hidrogênio e outras impurezas que podem congelar e se tornar corrosivas ou interromper o processo de liquefação. Depois disso, o GNL líquido é enviado por duto para um transportador de GNL ou para armazenamento para aguardar o transporte.
O terminal de regaseificação recebe gás natural geralmente por navio de outro local. No terminal de regaseificação, o GNL pode ser temporariamente armazenado ou enviado diretamente para a planta de regaseificação. Após a regaseificação, o GNL é enviado pela tubulação para ser distribuído ou colocado em armazenamento temporário até que seja necessário.

Recursos de gás natural e consumidores de GNL
O primeiro grande carregamento de gás natural liquefeito do mundo ocorreu em 1964, quando um navio foi abastecido com GNL na Argélia e navegou para Le Havre, na França. Antes de 1964, o gás natural na Argélia era um resíduo da produção de petróleo. chamados de "produtos residuais" porque não há mercado local para o gás natural e não há tubulação para transportar o gás para um local remoto. O gás natural só é descarregado na atmosfera ou queimado também nesse local.
Atualmente, o GNL é exportado de locais como: Argélia, Egito, Nigéria, Angola, Omã, Qatar, Iêmen, Rússia, Trinidad e Tobago, Austrália, Malásia e Indonésia, onde a produção de gás natural excede em muito a capacidade de consumo do mercado local. Naquele local, o preço do gás natural era baixo devido à quantidade abundante, mas pouca demanda local. Os preços baixos compensam o custo de construção de uma planta de liquefação de GNL, convertendo o gás natural em GNL e trazendo-o para um mercado distante.
Japão, Coréia do Sul e Taiwan são os primeiros grandes compradores de GNL. Esta área tem uma população muito elevada e muito pouco acesso aos recursos domésticos de combustível fóssil. O GNL lhes dá acesso a combustíveis limpos, porque esse combustível é fácil de distribuir, embora o oleoduto esteja em outro lugar. Muitos outros países agora têm terminais de regaseificação, incluindo Bélgica, Brasil, Canadá, Chile, China, França, Índia, Itália, Grécia, México, Espanha, Reino Unido e Estados Unidos.
