An Cosán's mission is to provide people with the path to learning, leadership and enterprise. They offer a variety of programmes for all age groups including early years education and care, parenting programmes, community education, higher education, and most recently, their award winning virtual education programme which brings their ethos beyond Jobstown to locations across the nation. Beginning as The Shanty in September 1986, the founders Dr. Anne Louise Gilligan and Dr. Katherine Zappone established a community-based education project to empower through education and support social transformation. Since September 1999, An Cosán has been located in Jobstown, at the base of the beautiful Dublin mountains, nestled in a three storey building which houses classrooms, a library, Open Learning Centre, Rainbow House Educational Childcare Centre, counselling service, and superb coffee dock.
